A lathe is a machine that rotates or turns a workpiece clamped in a chuck to perform tasks like cutting, facing, knurling and parting by making use of a cutting tool that advances into the workpiece to shape a cylindrical object. Lathes are used in different industries including woodturning, metal turning, metal spinning, pottery, glass work etc. There are three main types of lathes, namely: engine lathes, turret lathes and special application lathes. Engine lathes can be adapted for different operations in a conventional turning environment, while turret lathes and special application lathes are mostly used in production environments.
