A compressor is a mechanical apparatus designed to elevate the pressure of a gas by minimizing its volume. An air compressor represents a particular category of gas compressor.

Compressors can often be configured in stages, meaning the gas undergoes multiple compressions in a series of steps to achieve higher discharge pressure. Typically, the second stage is smaller in size compared to the first stage, allowing it to handle the already compressed gas without diminishing its pressure. Each subsequent stage continues to compress the gas, resulting in an increase in both pressure and temperature, unless intercooling is implemented between the stages.
